Narrative:

We were on the departure out of ZZZ; level at 12000 ft. A thunderstorm was in our path. We asked several times for a deviation and it was denied. Controller stated unable until center takes the handoff. We could not wait. During the deviation off the departure; we were handed off to center who granted the deviation. We stated that we were exercising captain's emergency authority/authorized before we made the turn. Even after that; we never did get the approval from ZZZ departure.
