Narrative:

During climb out; we got an EICAS message 'E1 hydraulic pump fail.' we complied with the checklist; notified ATC and dispatch; and continued to ZZZ. At approximately the midpoint of the flight; we noted the hydraulic system 1 quantity was decreasing and entered the amber range. At that point we got an EICAS message 'hydraulic 1 lo quantity.' we complied with the checklist for this item. We were losing hydraulic system 1 and we proceeded to run the 'hydraulic system 1 fail' checklist. We declared an emergency with ATC. We continued to ZZZ and requested runway 28. We complied with the abnormal landing gear extension checklist. We exited runway 28 and requested to be towed to the gate.
