Narrative:

During the takeoff roll the first officer started talking to me. I looked over to see what he was trying to bring to my attention. There was a flurry of words; but I couldn't quite make out what he was saying. I quickly understood that his seat had slid back; taking him out of position and unable to reach the rudder pedals. He had been trying to communication his predicament to me. Since my hand was already on the throttles and my feet in position; I took control of the aircraft assuming the PF role and continued the takeoff. Once airborne and at a safe ht above the ground; I returned the flying role to the first officer and assumed the pilot monitoring responsibility. It's not on a checklist anywhere; nor should it be; but we do need to make sure our seat is securely in position and that we can reach the flight controls. This event is self critiquing. The only reason it is being reported here is to identify a trend; should one exist; of a design failure or unusual wear in B737-400 pilot seat rails and tracks.

Narrative: DURING THE TKOF ROLL THE FO STARTED TALKING TO ME. I LOOKED OVER TO SEE WHAT HE WAS TRYING TO BRING TO MY ATTN. THERE WAS A FLURRY OF WORDS; BUT I COULDN'T QUITE MAKE OUT WHAT HE WAS SAYING. I QUICKLY UNDERSTOOD THAT HIS SEAT HAD SLID BACK; TAKING HIM OUT OF POS AND UNABLE TO REACH THE RUDDER PEDALS. HE HAD BEEN TRYING TO COM HIS PREDICAMENT TO ME. SINCE MY HAND WAS ALREADY ON THE THROTTLES AND MY FEET IN POS; I TOOK CTL OF THE ACFT ASSUMING THE PF ROLE AND CONTINUED THE TKOF. ONCE AIRBORNE AND AT A SAFE HT ABOVE THE GND; I RETURNED THE FLYING ROLE TO THE FO AND ASSUMED THE PLT MONITORING RESPONSIBILITY. IT'S NOT ON A CHKLIST ANYWHERE; NOR SHOULD IT BE; BUT WE DO NEED TO MAKE SURE OUR SEAT IS SECURELY IN POS AND THAT WE CAN REACH THE FLT CTLS. THIS EVENT IS SELF CRITIQUING.
