Narrative:

On the morning of dec/xa/07; I was working the gate where aircraft (a B767-300 ETOPS aircraft) arrived. The #8 main landing gear tire was deferred for maintenance from a previous flight. Myself and 2 other amt's in line maintenance went out to change the tire. One of the other amt's picked up the equipment; torque wrench; and tire. We worked together to change the tire according to the aircraft maintenance manual procedures. Upon completion of the maintenance event; I volunteered to fill out the log sheet. I transcribed the information into the logbook from the contract form. I did not check the confign of the part; because the tag indicated '767 er main' tire/wheel assembly. I was unaware that this aircraft still takes a standard B767-300 main tire. The aircraft is a B767 that was originally operated as a domestic B767-300; non-ETOPS. My confusion may have derived from the ETOPS designation on the nose gear door. When the part arrived at wheel and brake shop; the receiving technician noted that the part numbers removed/installed did not match and notified the maintenance control center of a confign discrepancy. The aircraft had already departed ZZZ and the tire was changed to the proper part on the aircraft's return to ZZZ1. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter stated this was the rh medium large transport; O/B aft main tire position. Some of his company's 767-300 aircraft; although they are in the ETOPS category and say ETOPS on the aircraft; are not extended range (er) aircraft and therefore require only the standard type main tire.

Title: A B767-300 ACFT #8 MAIN LANDING GEAR TIRE WAS REPLACED WITH AN EXTENDED RANGE TYPE TIRE INSTEAD OF THE STANDARD TYPE 767-300 MAIN TIRE.

Narrative: ON THE MORNING OF DEC/XA/07; I WAS WORKING THE GATE WHERE ACFT (A B767-300 ETOPS ACFT) ARRIVED. THE #8 MAIN LNDG GEAR TIRE WAS DEFERRED FOR MAINT FROM A PREVIOUS FLT. MYSELF AND 2 OTHER AMT'S IN LINE MAINT WENT OUT TO CHANGE THE TIRE. ONE OF THE OTHER AMT'S PICKED UP THE EQUIP; TORQUE WRENCH; AND TIRE. WE WORKED TOGETHER TO CHANGE THE TIRE ACCORDING TO THE ACFT MAINT MANUAL PROCS. UPON COMPLETION OF THE MAINT EVENT; I VOLUNTEERED TO FILL OUT THE LOG SHEET. I TRANSCRIBED THE INFO INTO THE LOGBOOK FROM THE CONTRACT FORM. I DID NOT CHK THE CONFIGN OF THE PART; BECAUSE THE TAG INDICATED '767 ER MAIN' TIRE/WHEEL ASSEMBLY. I WAS UNAWARE THAT THIS ACFT STILL TAKES A STANDARD B767-300 MAIN TIRE. THE ACFT IS A B767 THAT WAS ORIGINALLY OPERATED AS A DOMESTIC B767-300; NON-ETOPS. MY CONFUSION MAY HAVE DERIVED FROM THE ETOPS DESIGNATION ON THE NOSE GEAR DOOR. WHEN THE PART ARRIVED AT WHEEL AND BRAKE SHOP; THE RECEIVING TECHNICIAN NOTED THAT THE PART NUMBERS REMOVED/INSTALLED DID NOT MATCH AND NOTIFIED THE MAINT CTL CTR OF A CONFIGN DISCREPANCY. THE ACFT HAD ALREADY DEPARTED ZZZ AND THE TIRE WAS CHANGED TO THE PROPER PART ON THE ACFT'S RETURN TO ZZZ1. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: REPORTER STATED THIS WAS THE RH MLG; O/B AFT MAIN TIRE POSITION. SOME OF HIS COMPANY'S 767-300 ACFT; ALTHOUGH THEY ARE IN THE ETOPS CATEGORY AND SAY ETOPS ON THE ACFT; ARE NOT EXTENDED RANGE (ER) ACFT AND THEREFORE REQUIRE ONLY THE STANDARD TYPE MAIN TIRE.
