Narrative:

I was the PNF and had just gotten ATIS at ZZZ. It was VFR and they were landing xx and xy; we discussed the location of the FBO on the field and said that it would be a shorter taxi on xy. After we looked at the airport diagram and loaded the GPS approach as a backup to the visual; we continued with approach to the field. We got a base leg turn and then we were cleared for the visual xy; however we never got it that xy was the farthest west runway and looked at xz all the way to the airport. When we got handed off to tower he said it looked like we were lined up for xz; after a delay while we looked up what he was saying; we acknowledged he was right and said we would need to go around. He said slow to approach speed and he worked us into xz where takeoffs were lined up; and we landed uneventfully without any unsafe conditions. In my 20 yrs of airline and corporate flying I have not ever done that; reminding me even if the other guy is visual; the need to back up the approach is a must.

Title: A CORPORATE PILOT REPORTS LANDING PREPARATIONS FOR THE INCORRECT RWY AFTER FAILURE TO CHECK AVAILABLE ARPT INFORMATION AND CHARTS.

Narrative: I WAS THE PNF AND HAD JUST GOTTEN ATIS AT ZZZ. IT WAS VFR AND THEY WERE LNDG XX AND XY; WE DISCUSSED THE LOCATION OF THE FBO ON THE FIELD AND SAID THAT IT WOULD BE A SHORTER TAXI ON XY. AFTER WE LOOKED AT THE ARPT DIAGRAM AND LOADED THE GPS APCH AS A BACKUP TO THE VISUAL; WE CONTINUED WITH APCH TO THE FIELD. WE GOT A BASE LEG TURN AND THEN WE WERE CLRED FOR THE VISUAL XY; HOWEVER WE NEVER GOT IT THAT XY WAS THE FARTHEST W RWY AND LOOKED AT XZ ALL THE WAY TO THE ARPT. WHEN WE GOT HANDED OFF TO TWR HE SAID IT LOOKED LIKE WE WERE LINED UP FOR XZ; AFTER A DELAY WHILE WE LOOKED UP WHAT HE WAS SAYING; WE ACKNOWLEDGED HE WAS RIGHT AND SAID WE WOULD NEED TO GO AROUND. HE SAID SLOW TO APCH SPD AND HE WORKED US INTO XZ WHERE TKOFS WERE LINED UP; AND WE LANDED UNEVENTFULLY WITHOUT ANY UNSAFE CONDITIONS. IN MY 20 YRS OF AIRLINE AND CORPORATE FLYING I HAVE NOT EVER DONE THAT; REMINDING ME EVEN IF THE OTHER GUY IS VISUAL; THE NEED TO BACK UP THE APCH IS A MUST.
