Narrative:

Possible FCU failure and/or defective stator vane. During climb out noted absence of air pressurization followed by engine left system fail. We declared an emergency with intent to return to departure airport. Followed emergency procedures and opted to keep engine operating at low power instead of securing engine. Briefed single engine approach and landing procedures followed with immediate return checklist. Performed normal landing; rollout; and taxied clear of runway. Crash fire rescue equipment inspected left engine and then we taxied to gate. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: maintenance readout of the fault computer indicated problems with the fuel control unit and the variable stator control.

Title: B717 FLT CREW REPORTS LOW THRUST AND LEFT ENGINE EICAS WARNING SHORTLY AFTER TKOF. EMERGENCY IS DECLARED AND FLT CREW RETURNS TO DEPARTURE ARPT WITH ENGINE AT IDLE.

PERFORMED NORMAL LNDG; ROLLOUT; AND TAXIED CLR OF RWY. CFR INSPECTED L ENG AND THEN WE TAXIED TO GATE. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: MAINTENANCE READOUT OF THE FAULT COMPUTER INDICATED PROBLEMS WITH THE FUEL CONTROL UNIT AND THE VARIABLE STATOR CONTROL.
