Narrative:

In cruise at FL330. Advised the PF that I had to go to the lavatory. I called back to the flight attendant in charge and she advised it was clear. As I stood up to go to the back; the PF advised me that he needed to go after I went. I opened the door; and one of the flight attendants came up front as I went to the lavatory. A few mins later; I was ready to return to the flight deck. A moment later the flight deck door opened and the PF came walking out. No one was at the controllers. I said 'you can't do that!' and worked my way back into my seat. The flight attendant that was in the cockpit sat on the side jump seat waiting on us to trade places.
