Narrative:

On arrival to atl; with numerous thunderstorms in the vicinity of the airport; we were being vectored around thunderstorms and were within 15 NM of the airport. We had been told by the previous two approach controllers to expect runway 9R. The final approach controller gave us several WX avoidance vectors; asked us to slow to 180 KTS as quickly as possible; then without any prior warning; cleared us to intercept the localizer for the ILS/prm to runway 10; as we were passing through the runway 10 localizer; with the GPS set up for runway 9R and the 9R localizer tuned and identified. Fortunately; we had the airport in sight at this point and only flew slightly through the localizer while making all of the required corrections. If we had been in IMC conditions; this could have been very dangerous with parallel apches in progress.

Title: AN MD80 FLT CREW ON APPROACH TO RWY 9R AT ATL IS GIVEN A LATE RWY CHANGE TO RWY 10 AND FLIES SLIGHTLY THROUGH THE LOC.

Narrative: ON ARR TO ATL; WITH NUMEROUS TSTMS IN THE VICINITY OF THE ARPT; WE WERE BEING VECTORED AROUND TSTMS AND WERE WITHIN 15 NM OF THE ARPT. WE HAD BEEN TOLD BY THE PREVIOUS TWO APCH CTLRS TO EXPECT RWY 9R. THE FINAL APCH CTLR GAVE US SEVERAL WX AVOIDANCE VECTORS; ASKED US TO SLOW TO 180 KTS AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE; THEN WITHOUT ANY PRIOR WARNING; CLRED US TO INTERCEPT THE LOCALIZER FOR THE ILS/PRM TO RWY 10; AS WE WERE PASSING THROUGH THE RWY 10 LOCALIZER; WITH THE GPS SET UP FOR RWY 9R AND THE 9R LOCALIZER TUNED AND IDENTIFIED. FORTUNATELY; WE HAD THE ARPT IN SIGHT AT THIS POINT AND ONLY FLEW SLIGHTLY THROUGH THE LOCALIZER WHILE MAKING ALL OF THE REQUIRED CORRECTIONS. IF WE HAD BEEN IN IMC CONDITIONS; THIS COULD HAVE BEEN VERY DANGEROUS WITH PARALLEL APCHES IN PROGRESS.
