Narrative:

Headed south on airway just south of ZZZ; a line of thunderstorms lay across the airway extending out to the west. We made a request to deviate left of course for WX avoidance via HF. Request was denied. The captain then relayed to commercial radio 'I am exercising my emergency authority/authorized to deviate left of course.' we deviated left and returned on course prior to ZZZ2. ATC later relayed that request was denied due to sbound traffic on opposing airway.
