Narrative:

During arrival we were turned towards final and then cleared for the visual approach to runway 22R. Our last assigned altitude was 3000 ft and I leveled off there using the autoplt. We were below the GS; however; my intent was to capture from below and use the ILS and GPS as a backup to an autoplt flown visual approach. A target appeared on the TCAS 300 ft below and touching the airplane symbol. I went from white to yellow to red in about 5 seconds. I clicked off the autoplt; responded to the advisory and started a climb to the vsi-directed 1500 FPM climb. When 'clear of conflict' was announced; I decreased the climb and re-established myself on GS from above.

Narrative: DURING ARR WE WERE TURNED TOWARDS FINAL AND THEN CLRED FOR THE VISUAL APCH TO RWY 22R. OUR LAST ASSIGNED ALT WAS 3000 FT AND I LEVELED OFF THERE USING THE AUTOPLT. WE WERE BELOW THE GS; HOWEVER; MY INTENT WAS TO CAPTURE FROM BELOW AND USE THE ILS AND GPS AS A BACKUP TO AN AUTOPLT FLOWN VISUAL APCH. A TARGET APPEARED ON THE TCAS 300 FT BELOW AND TOUCHING THE AIRPLANE SYMBOL. I WENT FROM WHITE TO YELLOW TO RED IN ABOUT 5 SECONDS. I CLICKED OFF THE AUTOPLT; RESPONDED TO THE ADVISORY AND STARTED A CLB TO THE VSI-DIRECTED 1500 FPM CLB. WHEN 'CLR OF CONFLICT' WAS ANNOUNCED; I DECREASED THE CLB AND RE-ESTABLISHED MYSELF ON GS FROM ABOVE.
