After takeoff we got a flaps fail indication at retraction. Stopped at 8 degrees. Ran QRH. Completed QRH; which ultimately directed a return to nearest airport. Notified ATC and got vectors. Notified company and operations through ACARS. Had to burn off approximately 1000 pounds fuel to reach maximum landing weight at 47000 pounds. Ran after takeoff and preliminary landing checks. Notified flight attendant and passenger. Flew ILS since it was the longest runway. Landed without incident. Taxied to gate and maintenance reset flaps and signed logbook.
