Narrative:
Cleared to taxi to runway 29 intersection a. On a to the north of taxiway D performed the takeoff run-up and check on 121.9 ground frequency for this process. After run-up called tower 120.9 for takeoff clearance with turn to the east. 'Cleared for takeoff runway 29 right turn approved.' I requested left turnout. 'Cleared for takeoff runway 29 left turn approved.' as I taxied across the hold short line I look to my left down runway 29 (approach end) I was still about 20-30 ft from the runway edge. A cherokee touched down 40 ft away on runway 29. I simultaneously heard the tower 'hold short hold short.' I stopped short of the runway. Cause of situation: tower issued takeoff clearance when another aircraft was on short final for the same runway. Lesson for me: look down the runway in both directions before crossing the hold short line.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A PA28 PILOT WAS CLEARED FOR TAKEOFF BUT WHEN HE TAXIED TOWARD RUNWAY ANOTHER AIRCRAFT LANDED IN FRONT OF HIM.
Narrative: CLRED TO TAXI TO RWY 29 INTXN A. ON A TO THE N OF TXWY D PERFORMED THE TKOF RUN-UP AND CHK ON 121.9 GND FREQ FOR THIS PROCESS. AFTER RUN-UP CALLED TWR 120.9 FOR TKOF CLRNC WITH TURN TO THE E. 'CLRED FOR TKOF RWY 29 R TURN APPROVED.' I REQUESTED L TURNOUT. 'CLRED FOR TKOF RWY 29 L TURN APPROVED.' AS I TAXIED ACROSS THE HOLD SHORT LINE I LOOK TO MY L DOWN RWY 29 (APCH END) I WAS STILL ABOUT 20-30 FT FROM THE RWY EDGE. A CHEROKEE TOUCHED DOWN 40 FT AWAY ON RWY 29. I SIMULTANEOUSLY HEARD THE TWR 'HOLD SHORT HOLD SHORT.' I STOPPED SHORT OF THE RWY. CAUSE OF SITUATION: TWR ISSUED TKOF CLRNC WHEN ANOTHER ACFT WAS ON SHORT FINAL FOR THE SAME RWY. LESSON FOR ME: LOOK DOWN THE RWY IN BOTH DIRECTIONS BEFORE XING THE HOLD SHORT LINE.
