Narrative:

Laser strike. En route to sba in cruise flight at 6000 ft we were over malibu and noticed at about our 1-2 O'clock position a brilliant green laser tracking towards our aircraft. We could tell that the operator was triangulating his beam to make contact with us. The light came into the cockpit and flashed us for about 1 second. The light then turned to an amber color and shut off. The first officer did not look directly at the light but I was hit in the right eye. It produced an instant irritation as if I had been struck with an object. The irritation still exists this morning; but no loss of vision. We estimated the origin of the light to be east at about 5-7 mi. Reaction: we immediately contacted socal on 125.2 and alerted them to the strike. We also told point mugu approach of the incident to warn other pilots flying south of ventura. I also called TRACON upon landing and left a message about the incident.
