Narrative:

After an uneventful preflight; taxi; takeoff; and initial climb; we received an 'engine 2 compressor vane' ECAM while climbing out of about FL280. I was the PF. The captain performed the ECAM and I handled the flying duties and the ATC communications. Following the ECAM; the captain went to the FM and stated the initial action of 'land at the nearest suitable airport.' although the ECAM did not say this; we were aware of the anomaly. We agreed that ZZZ was the nearest suitable airport due to our position and altitude; and I declared an emergency and was cleared directly to XXX. When the airplane leveled at FL320; the power retarded and the expected engine 2 compressor stall ensued. The captain then shut down the engine and we began descent toward ZZZ. After conferring with dispatch; maintenance; the flight attendants were briefed to complete a cabin advisory and were briefed on the situation. During the return to ZZZ; we completed the appropriate checklists; obtained landing data; reviewed the overweight landing checklist and performed an uneventful single-engine landing on runway 36L. The emergency personnel at ZZZ inspected the right engine after we cleared the runway; and upon receiving word that there appeared to be no leaks; damage; or fire; we taxied to the gate. The flight attendants and crew all performed well during this event.

Title: A320 RECEIVES ENG 2 COMPRESSOR VANE ECAM DURING INITIAL CLIMB. SHUT DOWN THE ENGINE; DECLARE AN EMERGENCY AND RETURN TO DEP ARPT.

Narrative: AFTER AN UNEVENTFUL PREFLT; TAXI; TKOF; AND INITIAL CLB; WE RECEIVED AN 'ENG 2 COMPRESSOR VANE' ECAM WHILE CLBING OUT OF ABOUT FL280. I WAS THE PF. THE CAPT PERFORMED THE ECAM AND I HANDLED THE FLYING DUTIES AND THE ATC COMS. FOLLOWING THE ECAM; THE CAPT WENT TO THE FM AND STATED THE INITIAL ACTION OF 'LAND AT THE NEAREST SUITABLE ARPT.' ALTHOUGH THE ECAM DID NOT SAY THIS; WE WERE AWARE OF THE ANOMALY. WE AGREED THAT ZZZ WAS THE NEAREST SUITABLE ARPT DUE TO OUR POS AND ALT; AND I DECLARED AN EMER AND WAS CLRED DIRECTLY TO XXX. WHEN THE AIRPLANE LEVELED AT FL320; THE PWR RETARDED AND THE EXPECTED ENG 2 COMPRESSOR STALL ENSUED. THE CAPT THEN SHUT DOWN THE ENG AND WE BEGAN DSCNT TOWARD ZZZ. AFTER CONFERRING WITH DISPATCH; MAINT; THE FLT ATTENDANTS WERE BRIEFED TO COMPLETE A CABIN ADVISORY AND WERE BRIEFED ON THE SIT. DURING THE RETURN TO ZZZ; WE COMPLETED THE APPROPRIATE CHKLISTS; OBTAINED LNDG DATA; REVIEWED THE OVERWT LNDG CHKLIST AND PERFORMED AN UNEVENTFUL SINGLE-ENG LNDG ON RWY 36L. THE EMER PERSONNEL AT ZZZ INSPECTED THE R ENG AFTER WE CLRED THE RWY; AND UPON RECEIVING WORD THAT THERE APPEARED TO BE NO LEAKS; DAMAGE; OR FIRE; WE TAXIED TO THE GATE. THE FLT ATTENDANTS AND CREW ALL PERFORMED WELL DURING THIS EVENT.
