Narrative:

Flight took off and began climbing from runway 32L with the captain flying. Upon landing gear retraction; the nosewheel doors would not close. Per the ECAM; the gear was lowered again and attempted to be raised. Speed was 208 KTS. On the recycle attempt; the gear came down and locked normally; but retracted poorly. The main gear appeared to retract only 1/2 way and the nosewheel indicated red hash marks and doors still open. The crew lowered the gear again and received 3 green down and locked indications. The decision was made to return to ZZZ and land with good gear indications. Crew landed in ZZZ without further event and no damage or injuries occurred.
