Narrative:

During taxi out in madrid we received clearance from our second ground control frequency to taxi to runway 36L and hold on S5. Approaching S5 ground switched us to tower on 118.07. We stopped on S5 and checked in with tower. Tower cleared us to 'position and wait behind air carrier Y.' at that time there was a cpr jet in position on runway 36L and the air carrier Y jet was holding short. The #2 radio was on 121.5 with the volume up since we had left the ramp. Air carrier Y departed. We stopped in position on runway 36L. We received a call from another aircraft on 121.5 that tower was trying to reach us. We recycled 118.07 on the #1 radio and called tower. Tower informed us that he had been trying to contact us on 118.07 and an emergency frequency and that we had stopped all departures. We informed tower that we had heard only the call from another aircraft on 121.5. Tower then cleared us for takeoff.
