Narrative:

We were level at 4000 ft MSL; on new york approach inbound. ATC mentioned traffic at 11 O'clock and 5 mi. We did not have contact and told ATC we had no contact with the cessna traffic. Our TCAS squawked an RA to climb. I; the captain; responded as per our procedures; climbing to avoid any possible conflict. We notified ATC of our action and when 'clear of conflict;' descended as per ATC.
