Narrative:
The APU was inoperative on this aircraft; necessitating a gpu start at the gate. The gpu was parked in front of the #1 engine; so I briefed the guide man that I'd start the #2 engine; then disconnect air and electric; then call for push. After engine start; a ground person was observed to walk directly into the red zone in front of the running #2 engine; seemingly oblivious to the fact that it was running. Very dangerous! Perhaps a gentle reminder to the ground staff that this is a red zone for a reason; and include the recent incident at another airline where a ground handler was killed by this type of airplane doing something similar; would be in order.
