Departed normally. During flap retraction; got a leading edge slat asymmetry EICAS message and also leading edge light. Went to checklist and talked to maintenance controller. Returned to ZZZ for problem to be fixed. No unusual action required other than landing overweight and higher than normal airspeed. Declared emergency; requested landing runway xxr. Landing uneventful. Taxied to gate. Hot brakes as expected. Gave plane to maintenance to troubleshoot and fix.
