Narrative:

Engine unresponsive to throttle movement. Autothrottle disconnected and engine rolled back to 62% N1. The engine then rolled back and failed. I declared an emergency and asked for a turn and descent toward land. I then decided on an alternate and proceeded to alternate. I ran an engine fail/severe damage checklist; briefed the flight attendants; and uneventful landing. First officer flew while I ran checklist and talked. I made the landing. We ran all normal checklist.

Title: B737 FLT CREW HAS ENG FAILURE; DECLARE EMER AND LANDS.

Narrative: ENG UNRESPONSIVE TO THROTTLE MOVEMENT. AUTOTHROTTLE DISCONNECTED AND ENG ROLLED BACK TO 62% N1. THE ENG THEN ROLLED BACK AND FAILED. I DECLARED AN EMER AND ASKED FOR A TURN AND DSCNT TOWARD LAND. I THEN DECIDED ON AN ALTERNATE AND PROCEEDED TO ALTERNATE.
