Narrative:

I was flying direct pie/tbr at 5500 ft (030 degrees) with flight following. I was advised of 2 targets; one at my 11 O'clock position; and one at my 12 O'clock position. I responded that I saw 2 targets very close together at my 12 O'clock position. I never saw the second reported target until it passed directly under my plane flying from my 10 O'clock position to my 4 O'clock position. The fact that there were 3; not 2; targets may have caused confusion. I failed to continue searching for the third target; and I received no further ATC advisories on the unseen aircraft; led to a near collision.
