Narrative:

On approach to sdf we were assigned the localizer approach to runway 35L. Everything was normal with the approach until we crossed the crdnl FAF. Instead of correctly selecting vertical speed I inadvertently selected flight level change. The aircraft descended at approximately 1500 FPM and we heard a terrain GPWS call. The captain called go around and we discontinued the approach and went around to an uneventful approach and landing. The WX was reported to be well above minimums but we did not break out until right at our MDA. Supplemental information from acn 716220: at approximately 4 DME tower announced a low altitude alert monitor altitude.

Title: B757-200 FO SELECTS FLCH (FLT LEVEL CHANGE) RATHER THAN VERT SPD MODE DURING LOC ONLY APCH TO RWY 35 AT SDF. RESULTING EXCESSIVE RATE TRIGGERS GPWS AND LOW ALT ALERT WARNINGS.

Narrative: ON APCH TO SDF WE WERE ASSIGNED THE LOC APCH TO RWY 35L. EVERYTHING WAS NORMAL WITH THE APCH UNTIL WE CROSSED THE CRDNL FAF. INSTEAD OF CORRECTLY SELECTING VERT SPD I INADVERTENTLY SELECTED FLT LEVEL CHANGE. THE ACFT DSNDED AT APPROX 1500 FPM AND WE HEARD A TERRAIN GPWS CALL. THE CAPT CALLED GO AROUND AND WE DISCONTINUED THE APCH AND WENT AROUND TO AN UNEVENTFUL APCH AND LNDG. THE WX WAS RPTED TO BE WELL ABOVE MINIMUMS BUT WE DID NOT BREAK OUT UNTIL RIGHT AT OUR MDA. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 716220: AT APPROX 4 DME TWR ANNOUNCED A LOW ALT ALERT MONITOR ALT.
