Narrative:

Our original clearance was rdu-tyi-orf then the rest of the filed clearance. Approaching tyi we were given unexpected holding instructions at tyi; approximately 3 mi prior to the fix. Instruction were to hold southwest on J79 left turns 20 mi legs. Since we were not currently on that J route I asked the controller to give us the radial in order to reduce workload; he responded 'J79' again. We looked at the chart found the correct airway and entered it in to the FMS; at the same time we were also given multiple step climbs to FL270. Because of the workload and limited time prior to the fix of receiving instructions we had passed the fix and the FMS did not capture. The controller noticed that we had gotten northeast of the fix and questioned us. At this time we were assigned a heading of 270 degrees then vectored. No traffic deviations occurred and the controller responded that it was 'no problem.' I firmly believe that the event could have been avoided if we had been given prior notice of the holding; and a reasonable amount of time to prepare for it. Also; if the controller had replied with the radial when I asked instead of the jet route it would have greatly helped us avoid this situation.

Title: E135 FLT CREW HAS TRACK DEV WHEN LATE HOLDING CLRNC CANNOT BE PROGRAMMED PRIOR TO PASSING HOLDING FIX.

Narrative: OUR ORIGINAL CLRNC WAS RDU-TYI-ORF THEN THE REST OF THE FILED CLRNC. APCHING TYI WE WERE GIVEN UNEXPECTED HOLDING INSTRUCTIONS AT TYI; APPROX 3 MI PRIOR TO THE FIX. INSTRUCTION WERE TO HOLD SW ON J79 L TURNS 20 MI LEGS. SINCE WE WERE NOT CURRENTLY ON THAT J RTE I ASKED THE CTLR TO GIVE US THE RADIAL IN ORDER TO REDUCE WORKLOAD; HE RESPONDED 'J79' AGAIN. WE LOOKED AT THE CHART FOUND THE CORRECT AIRWAY AND ENTERED IT IN TO THE FMS; AT THE SAME TIME WE WERE ALSO GIVEN MULTIPLE STEP CLBS TO FL270. BECAUSE OF THE WORKLOAD AND LIMITED TIME PRIOR TO THE FIX OF RECEIVING INSTRUCTIONS WE HAD PASSED THE FIX AND THE FMS DID NOT CAPTURE. THE CTLR NOTICED THAT WE HAD GOTTEN NE OF THE FIX AND QUESTIONED US. AT THIS TIME WE WERE ASSIGNED A HDG OF 270 DEGS THEN VECTORED. NO TFC DEVS OCCURRED AND THE CTLR RESPONDED THAT IT WAS 'NO PROB.' I FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT THE EVENT COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED IF WE HAD BEEN GIVEN PRIOR NOTICE OF THE HOLDING; AND A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME TO PREPARE FOR IT. ALSO; IF THE CTLR HAD REPLIED WITH THE RADIAL WHEN I ASKED INSTEAD OF THE JET RTE IT WOULD HAVE GREATLY HELPED US AVOID THIS SITUATION.
