Narrative:

Level at 12000 ft on radar vector from norcal approach. Approach controller advised us of VFR traffic at 11500 ft. No visual contact but as traffic neared TCAS showed it only 200 ft below our level flight of 12000 ft. RA activated and commanded climb. First officer; as PF; disconnected autoplt and complied with RA. During RA maneuver; I observed traffic at 12 O'clock position and what appeared to be our assigned altitude of 12000 ft. After clear of traffic; we descend back to assigned altitude; and informed norcal approach of our deviation. Maximum altitude gained was to 12500 ft. After reporting RA to norcal approach they switched us over to next frequency.

Title: A B727 AT 12000 FT GOT AN RA AND CLBED TO 12500 FT TO AVOID CONFLICT WITH OPPOSITE DIRECTION VFR TFC.

Narrative: LEVEL AT 12000 FT ON RADAR VECTOR FROM NORCAL APCH. APCH CTLR ADVISED US OF VFR TFC AT 11500 FT. NO VISUAL CONTACT BUT AS TFC NEARED TCAS SHOWED IT ONLY 200 FT BELOW OUR LEVEL FLT OF 12000 FT. RA ACTIVATED AND COMMANDED CLB. FO; AS PF; DISCONNECTED AUTOPLT AND COMPLIED WITH RA. DURING RA MANEUVER; I OBSERVED TFC AT 12 O'CLOCK POS AND WHAT APPEARED TO BE OUR ASSIGNED ALT OF 12000 FT. AFTER CLR OF TFC; WE DSND BACK TO ASSIGNED ALT; AND INFORMED NORCAL APCH OF OUR DEV. MAX ALT GAINED WAS TO 12500 FT. AFTER RPTING RA TO NORCAL APCH THEY SWITCHED US OVER TO NEXT FREQ.
