Narrative:

Prior to departure; I noticed on the paperwork that we had a cdl item that prevented us from using 40 degree flaps for landing. We also had an APU problem that needed to be fixed and were coming up on departure time. En route we had WX deviations and 3 runway changes at the last min. We were supposed to land on the short runway (7200 ft) so we chose to land with 40 degrees flaps. Because of the distrs we didn't catch the fact that we were limited to 28 degrees flaps. After landing; we realized that we landed with the wrong flap setting. Maintenance did an inspection of the aircraft and found nothing wrong. It would be a great help for us and for other crews; to prevent this from happening again; if a placard is posted on or near the flap handle that stated the 28 degree flap landing requirement.

Title: MD83 FLT CREW HAD FLAPS MEL'ED FOR 28 DEGS ONLY; LANDS WITH 40 DEGS.

WE WERE SUPPOSED TO LAND ON THE SHORT RWY (7200 FT) SO WE CHOSE TO LAND WITH 40 DEGS FLAPS. BECAUSE OF THE DISTRS WE DIDN'T CATCH THE FACT THAT WE WERE LIMITED TO 28 DEGS FLAPS. AFTER LNDG; WE REALIZED THAT WE LANDED WITH THE WRONG FLAP SETTING. MAINT DID AN INSPECTION OF THE ACFT AND FOUND NOTHING WRONG. IT WOULD BE A GREAT HELP FOR US AND FOR OTHER CREWS; TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING AGAIN; IF A PLACARD IS POSTED ON OR NEAR THE FLAP HANDLE THAT STATED THE 28 DEG FLAP LNDG REQUIREMENT.
