Narrative:

After takeoff from ukt on an instructional flight I directed the pilot to the practice area for airwork. During practice I monitored the certified gnx-480 GPS to ensure we did not enter any restricted airspace. I noted that the student had drifted north and when checking the GPS found that it had lost 'lock' and the screen had frozen. I immediately directed the student to turn south and continued the lesson. When I was able to reboot the GPS; I found we may have entered the allentown class C airspace without permission (this may not have happened as we were near the border). This problem will be prevented in the future by more closely monitoring the GPS status and local landmarks.

Title: AN MXT7 INSTRUCTOR RPTS MONITORING HIS ACFT'S POSITION ON A NON-TRACKING GPS AND POSSIBLY ALLOWING HIS STUDENT TO FLY INTO ABE'S CLASS C.

Narrative: AFTER TKOF FROM UKT ON AN INSTRUCTIONAL FLT I DIRECTED THE PLT TO THE PRACTICE AREA FOR AIRWORK. DURING PRACTICE I MONITORED THE CERTIFIED GNX-480 GPS TO ENSURE WE DID NOT ENTER ANY RESTRICTED AIRSPACE. I NOTED THAT THE STUDENT HAD DRIFTED NORTH AND WHEN CHKING THE GPS FOUND THAT IT HAD LOST 'LOCK' AND THE SCREEN HAD FROZEN. I IMMEDIATELY DIRECTED THE STUDENT TO TURN SOUTH AND CONTINUED THE LESSON. WHEN I WAS ABLE TO REBOOT THE GPS; I FOUND WE MAY HAVE ENTERED THE ALLENTOWN CLASS C AIRSPACE WITHOUT PERMISSION (THIS MAY NOT HAVE HAPPENED AS WE WERE NEAR THE BORDER). THIS PROBLEM WILL BE PREVENTED IN THE FUTURE BY MORE CLOSELY MONITORING THE GPS STATUS AND LOCAL LANDMARKS.
