Narrative:

After being cleared for the lax seavu 1 arrival; we were given several airspeed changes which in turn made it harder to make several of the crossing restrs on the arrival. Rather than flying the aircraft; the first officer tried to program the FMS to do a VNAV descent; which contributed to us starting down late. We were to cross dixxn intersection at 12000 ft. With the high rate of descent we had; the autoplt overshot and descended to 11650 ft. The first officer turned off the autoplt and climbed up to 12000 ft. The next fix was tarol intersection with a crossing altitude of 9700-9000 ft. We crossed that point about 300 ft high. We landed on runway 25R. The controller never questioned us on any of the altdevs. Both the captain and first officer were new to the aircraft. Also; the first officer's FMS display was inoperative; which requires him to reach across to program or to direct the PNF to program. The captain had not flown into lax for about 7 yrs and the first officer had only been there once. All were contributing factors.

Title: B737-800 FLT CREW OVERSHOOTS AND MISSES THE ALT RESTR ON THE SEAVU 1 ARR TO LAX.

Narrative: AFTER BEING CLRED FOR THE LAX SEAVU 1 ARR; WE WERE GIVEN SEVERAL AIRSPD CHANGES WHICH IN TURN MADE IT HARDER TO MAKE SEVERAL OF THE XING RESTRS ON THE ARR. RATHER THAN FLYING THE ACFT; THE FO TRIED TO PROGRAM THE FMS TO DO A VNAV DSCNT; WHICH CONTRIBUTED TO US STARTING DOWN LATE. WE WERE TO CROSS DIXXN INTXN AT 12000 FT. WITH THE HIGH RATE OF DSCNT WE HAD; THE AUTOPLT OVERSHOT AND DSNDED TO 11650 FT. THE FO TURNED OFF THE AUTOPLT AND CLBED UP TO 12000 FT. THE NEXT FIX WAS TAROL INTXN WITH A XING ALT OF 9700-9000 FT. WE CROSSED THAT POINT ABOUT 300 FT HIGH. WE LANDED ON RWY 25R. THE CTLR NEVER QUESTIONED US ON ANY OF THE ALTDEVS. BOTH THE CAPT AND FO WERE NEW TO THE ACFT. ALSO; THE FO'S FMS DISPLAY WAS INOP; WHICH REQUIRES HIM TO REACH ACROSS TO PROGRAM OR TO DIRECT THE PNF TO PROGRAM. THE CAPT HAD NOT FLOWN INTO LAX FOR ABOUT 7 YRS AND THE FO HAD ONLY BEEN THERE ONCE. ALL WERE CONTRIBUTING FACTORS.
