Narrative:

We were issued holding instructions from ATC (ZDC) to hold at skils intersection as published on the natnl 1 RNAV arrival. The depicted holding pattern show the required leg distance of the pattern legs at 4 NM. I was the PF and programmed the FMC for the hold. Instead of entering the 4 NM leg distance in the FMC. I entered the 4 NM on the leg portion of the holding page. When we turned outbound after entering the hold; we flew too far outbound and left the depicted holding pattern. ATC asked why we left the holding pattern. We indicated that we made a programming error and would turn back to and re-establish the holding pattern. We were both very busy avoiding WX and the captain did not check the FMC after I programmed the hold. He was busy calculating fuel requirements; talking to dispatch and the passenger. Our task load was high at that time. There was no conflict with other traffic.
