Narrative:

Aircraft was returning due to equipment problems. My trainee vectored the aircraft for sequencing; then initiated an automated handoff to approach control. Computer routing on the flight plan was correct; but handoff went back to the departure sector instead of the arrival sector; and we were late catching the error. The data tags showed 'D1L' for the sector receiving the handoff instead of 'D1E.' I am very curious how our computer automation erred this way. I have never had occasion to hand off to a departure sector at approach control and have never before seen 'D1L' in a data block.
