Narrative:

Aircraft arrived from maintenance runup. Normal push delayed for maintenance release. Single engine taxi to runway 27L. Normal takeoff runway 27L. Flex 61. At first thrusts change at about 1600 ft; had small yaw and slight engine sync differential which resolved on own within 2-3 seconds. Made mental note to reselect mct out of 10000 ft to confirm fadec #1 work done by maintenance prior to flight not the problem. Engine decided to fail on own. While leveling at 5000 ft in altitude; we were reclred to 6000 ft and I called for managed speed. As thrust came back up; we got engine #1 vane ECAM with master caution light followed shortly thereafter by compressor stalling and surge with red egt (obs 725 momentarily). ECAM was still thinking so I retarded #1 throttle and then we ran ECAM procedure; electing to shut down engine; but no damage noted so we did not use fire procedure 'ot' bottles. Got delay vectors; ACARS'ed dispatch; talked to flight attendants and passenger and returned for ILS runway 14R. Got continuous changing ecams for #1 engine so we finally turned off autothrust which seemed to resolve problem. At about 1500 ft AGL; the autoplt seemed to be having a hard time trimming out yaw due to high power setting to pick up airspeed; so I hand flew the remainder of the approach and landing. Turned off at taxiway M and taxiway T; then held while we got ok to taxi on the #2 engine and got a gate.

Title: A320 ON DEP FROM ORD HAS #1 ENG FAILURE AFTER LEVELING AT 5000 FT; RETURNED TO DEP ARPT SUCCESSFULLY.

Narrative: ACFT ARRIVED FROM MAINT RUNUP. NORMAL PUSH DELAYED FOR MAINT RELEASE. SINGLE ENG TAXI TO RWY 27L. NORMAL TKOF RWY 27L. FLEX 61. AT FIRST THRUSTS CHANGE AT ABOUT 1600 FT; HAD SMALL YAW AND SLIGHT ENG SYNC DIFFERENTIAL WHICH RESOLVED ON OWN WITHIN 2-3 SECONDS. MADE MENTAL NOTE TO RESELECT MCT OUT OF 10000 FT TO CONFIRM FADEC #1 WORK DONE BY MAINT PRIOR TO FLT NOT THE PROB. ENG DECIDED TO FAIL ON OWN. WHILE LEVELING AT 5000 FT IN ALT; WE WERE RECLRED TO 6000 FT AND I CALLED FOR MANAGED SPD. AS THRUST CAME BACK UP; WE GOT ENG #1 VANE ECAM WITH MASTER CAUTION LIGHT FOLLOWED SHORTLY THEREAFTER BY COMPRESSOR STALLING AND SURGE WITH RED EGT (OBS 725 MOMENTARILY). ECAM WAS STILL THINKING SO I RETARDED #1 THROTTLE AND THEN WE RAN ECAM PROC; ELECTING TO SHUT DOWN ENG; BUT NO DAMAGE NOTED SO WE DID NOT USE FIRE PROC 'OT' BOTTLES. GOT DELAY VECTORS; ACARS'ED DISPATCH; TALKED TO FLT ATTENDANTS AND PAX AND RETURNED FOR ILS RWY 14R. GOT CONTINUOUS CHANGING ECAMS FOR #1 ENG SO WE FINALLY TURNED OFF AUTOTHRUST WHICH SEEMED TO RESOLVE PROB. AT ABOUT 1500 FT AGL; THE AUTOPLT SEEMED TO BE HAVING A HARD TIME TRIMMING OUT YAW DUE TO HIGH PWR SETTING TO PICK UP AIRSPD; SO I HAND FLEW THE REMAINDER OF THE APCH AND LNDG. TURNED OFF AT TXWY M AND TXWY T; THEN HELD WHILE WE GOT OK TO TAXI ON THE #2 ENG AND GOT A GATE.
