Narrative:

Navigation error due to transposition of digits. During preflight manually loaded route including waypoint KD45U incorrectly entered as KD54U. Route was checked by both first officer and captain; compared FMS to flight plan and flight plan to pre departure clearance. Error was not detected until en route when ZAB controller inquired about our deviation from route. He requested we confirm we were going to KD45U. We replied that we were going to KD54U. Nothing further was said about it. Next controller confirmed our clearance now stated direct KD54U and then next waypoint. KD45U and KD54U are geographically close so course line and distance all seemed reasonable during preflight checks and en route.

Title: DURING PREFLT A B757-200 CREW ENTERED WAYPOINT KD54U INSTEAD OF KD45U. ATC OBSERVED ACFT FLYING TO KD54U; CLRED THEM DIRECT KD54U AND THEN TO THEIR NEXT FIX.

Narrative: NAVIGATION ERROR DUE TO TRANSPOSITION OF DIGITS. DURING PREFLT MANUALLY LOADED RTE INCLUDING WAYPOINT KD45U INCORRECTLY ENTERED AS KD54U. RTE WAS CHKED BY BOTH FO AND CAPT; COMPARED FMS TO FLT PLAN AND FLT PLAN TO PDC. ERROR WAS NOT DETECTED UNTIL ENRTE WHEN ZAB CTLR INQUIRED ABOUT OUR DEV FROM RTE. HE REQUESTED WE CONFIRM WE WERE GOING TO KD45U. WE REPLIED THAT WE WERE GOING TO KD54U. NOTHING FURTHER WAS SAID ABOUT IT. NEXT CTLR CONFIRMED OUR CLRNC NOW STATED DIRECT KD54U AND THEN NEXT WAYPOINT. KD45U AND KD54U ARE GEOGRAPHICALLY CLOSE SO COURSE LINE AND DISTANCE ALL SEEMED REASONABLE DURING PREFLT CHKS AND ENRTE.
