Narrative:

The aircraft's informal flight log showed that the last pilot to fly it put 40 gallons of fuel in the aircraft. My preflight did include visually checking fuel levels and fuel indicators. Fuel indicators showed slightly more than 1/2 tanks but visual inspection showed fuel tanks at about 3 inches down from fuel neck on both tanks. I departed keeping the aircraft's fuel in mind. I noticed that the fuel tanks had indicated 1/4 tanks and had rapidly indicated empty. At that time; I asked center to divert me to the nearest airport and was diverted to ZZZ. The aircraft ran out of fuel (engine sputtered and died) on 1 1/2 mi final approach to ZZZ. I then landed on the airport property about 150 yards from the runway threshold with no damage being done to either the aircraft or to property on the ground.

Title: C182 PLT EXECUTES AN OFF FIELD LNDG DUE TO FUEL EXHAUSTION.

Narrative: THE ACFT'S INFORMAL FLT LOG SHOWED THAT THE LAST PLT TO FLY IT PUT 40 GALLONS OF FUEL IN THE ACFT. MY PREFLT DID INCLUDE VISUALLY CHKING FUEL LEVELS AND FUEL INDICATORS. FUEL INDICATORS SHOWED SLIGHTLY MORE THAN 1/2 TANKS BUT VISUAL INSPECTION SHOWED FUEL TANKS AT ABOUT 3 INCHES DOWN FROM FUEL NECK ON BOTH TANKS. I DEPARTED KEEPING THE ACFT'S FUEL IN MIND. I NOTICED THAT THE FUEL TANKS HAD INDICATED 1/4 TANKS AND HAD RAPIDLY INDICATED EMPTY. AT THAT TIME; I ASKED CENTER TO DIVERT ME TO THE NEAREST ARPT AND WAS DIVERTED TO ZZZ. THE ACFT RAN OUT OF FUEL (ENG SPUTTERED AND DIED) ON 1 1/2 MI FINAL APCH TO ZZZ. I THEN LANDED ON THE ARPT PROPERTY ABOUT 150 YARDS FROM THE RWY THRESHOLD WITH NO DAMAGE BEING DONE TO EITHER THE ACFT OR TO PROPERTY ON THE GND.
