Narrative:

I filed for and received an IFR clearance to depart. On climb out; but before making contact with ATC; a distinctive smell of smoke filled the cockpit and my transponder stopped functioning. I executed a successful precautionary landing. During the excitement; I neglected to contact ATC by my designated contact time. This resulted in a NORDO situation and the blocking of airspace. The airport manager was called and ATC was advised of my safe return after a 10 min (or so) lapse.
