Narrative:

While on a recommended route around thunderstorms; center told us free to maneuver around thunderstorms in area; when clear; direct ZZZ. Once we were close to storms; the controller abruptly stated left to heading 035 degrees. We told him 'unable; that will fly us into line of thunderstorms.' he said if we can't fly heading 035 degrees the only other choice was to squawk emergency which we did as we had no other choice. Supplemental information from acn 701600: chief pilot spoke with the supervisor at center as the controller called my company's dispatch after the incident to report that we had entered restr airspace. The supervisor said that the controller was new and handled the airspace poorly.
