Narrative:

In cruise; propeller suddenly oversped. Told ATC of problem and that I needed to land immediately. Emporia closest. After propeller surge; propeller slowed; manifold pressure dropped. Engine began running rough. Oil pressure below green. I reported that I thought I was losing the engine. I discovered that egt was very high. I enriched mixture. Engine stopped missing. RPM now 1900 (2400 normal). Descended and made straight-in on runway 19. Announced on CTAF and plane taxiing for opposite direction takeoff held. Landing normal with partial power. Propeller governor had failed. In none of my training or reading is this failure discussed; that I can recall. I was not prepared. Note: with new governor; oil pressure is higher and oil temperature lower than past 200-300 hours. Governor was failing -- I didn't know it!

Title: A PLT RPTS HIS ACFT'S PROP GOVERNOR FAILURE CAUSING AN OVERSPD; LOW OIL PRESSURE; AND A ROUGH RUNNING ENG PRODUCING REDUCED PWR.

Narrative: IN CRUISE; PROP SUDDENLY OVERSPED. TOLD ATC OF PROB AND THAT I NEEDED TO LAND IMMEDIATELY. EMPORIA CLOSEST. AFTER PROP SURGE; PROP SLOWED; MANIFOLD PRESSURE DROPPED. ENG BEGAN RUNNING ROUGH. OIL PRESSURE BELOW GREEN. I RPTED THAT I THOUGHT I WAS LOSING THE ENG. I DISCOVERED THAT EGT WAS VERY HIGH. I ENRICHED MIXTURE. ENG STOPPED MISSING. RPM NOW 1900 (2400 NORMAL). DSNDED AND MADE STRAIGHT-IN ON RWY 19. ANNOUNCED ON CTAF AND PLANE TAXIING FOR OPPOSITE DIRECTION TKOF HELD. LNDG NORMAL WITH PARTIAL PWR. PROP GOVERNOR HAD FAILED. IN NONE OF MY TRAINING OR READING IS THIS FAILURE DISCUSSED; THAT I CAN RECALL. I WAS NOT PREPARED. NOTE: WITH NEW GOVERNOR; OIL PRESSURE IS HIGHER AND OIL TEMP LOWER THAN PAST 200-300 HRS. GOVERNOR WAS FAILING -- I DIDN'T KNOW IT!
