Narrative:

I was off the frequency; in the back briefing the passenger for the arrival and talking to operations for our gate. The first officer was flying and had been cleared to cross drivr at 11000 ft and awsum at 10000 ft. I returned from being away to find the first officer was at 9000 ft at awsum and beginning to climb back to 10000 ft. The controller called and asked our assigned altitude and I verified 10000 ft and that we were climbing back up to that altitude. Upon asking the first officer what happened; he replied that the autoplt did not stop at 10000 ft. I asked him why he allowed the jet to descend beyond the assigned altitude so far and he replied that he did not know.
