Narrative:

At FAF tried to lower landing gear; however; it would not extend. Hydraulic pump came on but doors remained closed and gear stayed up (red light; no green). Missed approach and departed north. Called FSS; asked them to verify that fire fighters were on duty. Declared emergency with approach control. Alternate gear extension worked and landed uneventfully. (Nose gear came down immediately but mains took yawing. Got 3 down and locked but 'blew bottle' anyway per procedure.) canceled emergency status on taxi in. Maintenance purged; reset; and refilled system as per maintenance manual. We flew the plane back gear down. That flight was uneventful.
