Narrative:

After receiving clearance for the sts runway 32 ILS; I switched the garmin 530 GPS navigator from GPS to localizer mode and got a reverse sensing on the HSI. Center advised we were west of course and not correcting. At that point I should have been at 1900 ft. At 1800 ft I saw the problem and canceled IFR in VFR conditions. The problem lies in the autoplt reverse sensing switch being activated accidentally by my right seat passenger; giving a false localizer sensing. Part of my pre-landing checklist in this aircraft will now include 'autoplt reverse sensing -- off.'
