Narrative:

On a practice ILS approach to runway 1; we were vectored to an ILS runway 1 approach. The private pilot had tuned in and idented the localizer; and placed the inbound course correctly in the HSI. The autoplt was on in the heading and altitude mode. Approach control gave us a heading to intercept the course; an altitude to maintain until established; and cleared for an ILS runway 1 approach. As the HSI centered; the autoplt went to the coupled mode. Everything was done correctly. However; the autoplt had us 1 mi east of course with the localizer centered on GS. Approach control was aware and asked us if we had the approach set up. We informed him we did and could tell we were east of the localizer and would correct. We tuned on the #2 navigation and confirmed we were east of course. We had the HSI in the navigation/ILS mode and not GPS. The aircraft went into a radio shop to work out why it showed us on course when we were not. It showed the error once and then could not duplicate the problem again. This aircraft is equipped with a navcom; HSI and 3-AXIS autoplt.

Title: A BE36 ON AN ILS APCH WITH THE HORIZ SITUATION INDICATOR CTRED THE AUTOPLT HAD AIRPLANE 1 MI E OF COURSE. APCH CTL VERIFIED AIRPLANE WAS 1 MI E.

Narrative: ON A PRACTICE ILS APCH TO RWY 1; WE WERE VECTORED TO AN ILS RWY 1 APCH. THE PVT PLT HAD TUNED IN AND IDENTED THE LOC; AND PLACED THE INBOUND COURSE CORRECTLY IN THE HSI. THE AUTOPLT WAS ON IN THE HDG AND ALT MODE. APCH CTL GAVE US A HDG TO INTERCEPT THE COURSE; AN ALT TO MAINTAIN UNTIL ESTABLISHED; AND CLRED FOR AN ILS RWY 1 APCH. AS THE HSI CTRED; THE AUTOPLT WENT TO THE COUPLED MODE. EVERYTHING WAS DONE CORRECTLY. HOWEVER; THE AUTOPLT HAD US 1 MI E OF COURSE WITH THE LOC CTRED ON GS. APCH CTL WAS AWARE AND ASKED US IF WE HAD THE APCH SET UP. WE INFORMED HIM WE DID AND COULD TELL WE WERE E OF THE LOC AND WOULD CORRECT. WE TUNED ON THE #2 NAV AND CONFIRMED WE WERE E OF COURSE. WE HAD THE HSI IN THE NAV/ILS MODE AND NOT GPS. THE ACFT WENT INTO A RADIO SHOP TO WORK OUT WHY IT SHOWED US ON COURSE WHEN WE WERE NOT. IT SHOWED THE ERROR ONCE AND THEN COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROB AGAIN. THIS ACFT IS EQUIPPED WITH A NAVCOM; HSI AND 3-AXIS AUTOPLT.
