Narrative:

We had been cleared for takeoff at smf on runway 16L. When we taxied out on the runway; we noticed the elevator trim was running up and then back down 3-4 degrees uncommanded. We did a 180 degree turn on the runway and taxied back to the hold short to troubleshoot. The autoplt had been engaged inadvertently on the taxi out. When and where we don't know. We disengaged the autoplt; re-ran the checklist; everything appeared normal and we told tower we were ready for takeoff. We took off and flew without further incident.
