Narrative:

During #2 engine start after pushback with brakes set; master caution 'engine' and 'engine control' light on overhead panel illuminated. Smoke and torching reported by ground control; pushback crew; and other aircraft. Shortly after; flight attendants reported smoke in the cabin. Engine tailpipe fire checklist initiated and #2 start lever placed to cutoff. Flight attendants reported increasing smoke in cabin and ground personnel reported continuing smoke and torching. Tailpipe fire checklist terminated. Passenger evacuate/evacuation checklist initiated and passenger evacuate/evacuation began. Passenger were immediately escorted to terminal by ground personnel. After evacing passenger; smoke had cleared and torching had stopped. Maintenance and fire personnel arrived at R1 door so flight crew remained on board to provide information to maintenance crew. Flight crew departed aircraft via L2 door and portable airstairs.

Narrative: DURING #2 ENG START AFTER PUSHBACK WITH BRAKES SET; MASTER CAUTION 'ENG' AND 'ENG CTL' LIGHT ON OVERHEAD PANEL ILLUMINATED. SMOKE AND TORCHING RPTED BY GND CTL; PUSHBACK CREW; AND OTHER ACFT. SHORTLY AFTER; FLT ATTENDANTS RPTED SMOKE IN THE CABIN. ENG TAILPIPE FIRE CHKLIST INITIATED AND #2 START LEVER PLACED TO CUTOFF. FLT ATTENDANTS RPTED INCREASING SMOKE IN CABIN AND GND PERSONNEL RPTED CONTINUING SMOKE AND TORCHING. TAILPIPE FIRE CHKLIST TERMINATED. PAX EVAC CHKLIST INITIATED AND PAX EVAC BEGAN. PAX WERE IMMEDIATELY ESCORTED TO TERMINAL BY GND PERSONNEL. AFTER EVACING PAX; SMOKE HAD CLRED AND TORCHING HAD STOPPED. MAINT AND FIRE PERSONNEL ARRIVED AT R1 DOOR SO FLT CREW REMAINED ON BOARD TO PROVIDE INFO TO MAINT CREW. FLT CREW DEPARTED ACFT VIA L2 DOOR AND PORTABLE AIRSTAIRS.
