Narrative:
Showed up at svmc in the morning on sep/sat/05 to fly XXX home as flight abc. I had a message from station personnel to call maintenance control. When I spoke with maintenance control they had me check the aircraft to see if the hydraulic panel had a 'standby rudder on' light installed. I told them it did not. They then told me this aircraft was grounded because a modification had been installed on this aircraft and subsequent to this; someone in ZZZ maintenance had switched out the hydraulic control panel with one of an unmodified aircraft. Because of this maintenance action; we and others prior flew a plane that should have been grounded. Upon reviewing the logbook again from entries made; there was no way we could have determined this. The aircraft operated fine; there was never any safety of flight issues involved.

Title: A B737-800 HAD A STANDBY RUDDER LIGHT MODIFICATION; BUT HAD AN UNMODIFIED HYD CTL PANEL INSTALLED. ACFT WAS GNDED FOR PANEL CHANGE.
Narrative: SHOWED UP AT SVMC IN THE MORNING ON SEP/SAT/05 TO FLY XXX HOME AS FLT ABC. I HAD A MESSAGE FROM STATION PERSONNEL TO CALL MAINT CTL. WHEN I SPOKE WITH MAINT CTL THEY HAD ME CHK THE ACFT TO SEE IF THE HYD PANEL HAD A 'STANDBY RUDDER ON' LIGHT INSTALLED. I TOLD THEM IT DID NOT. THEY THEN TOLD ME THIS ACFT WAS GNDED BECAUSE A MODIFICATION HAD BEEN INSTALLED ON THIS ACFT AND SUBSEQUENT TO THIS; SOMEONE IN ZZZ MAINT HAD SWITCHED OUT THE HYD CTL PANEL WITH ONE OF AN UNMODIFIED ACFT. BECAUSE OF THIS MAINT ACTION; WE AND OTHERS PRIOR FLEW A PLANE THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN GNDED. UPON REVIEWING THE LOGBOOK AGAIN FROM ENTRIES MADE; THERE WAS NO WAY WE COULD HAVE DETERMINED THIS. THE ACFT OPERATED FINE; THERE WAS NEVER ANY SAFETY OF FLT ISSUES INVOLVED.
