Narrative:

Upon departure from teb at approximately 2.5 mi our aircraft lost its DME signal from the teb VOR. Using a weak cross fix from patterson NDB; I determined that we were in excess of 4.5 mi from the VOR as specified by the teb 5 departure for a climb from 1500 ft to 2000 ft. At approximately 1800 ft in the climb; the DME readout came back on and showed 4.0 mi. I leveled at 2000 ft and advised ATC of our altitude.
