Narrative:

Uncowled right engine in preparation to have removed for overhaul. When engine data plate was exposed; noticed that engine serial number did not match the serial number in the engine logbook. Aircraft is a 1967 beech baron 95-B55 with continental io-470L engines. I have owned the airplane for approximately 6 yrs; and the engine has not been removed at any time since I bought the airplane. The problem was not revealed during the pre-purchase inspection or during numerous annual inspections and maintenance actions performed by a number of repair facilities over the yrs. The engine log indicates that the engine was installed sep/xa/72; apparently as an overhaul-exchange unit. The log also shows that the engine was last overhauled on dec/xa/95; and that the case was 'reworked' as part of that overhaul. I would speculate that 'reworked' may mean it was replaced with a svcable case from another engine; and the original data plate was not xferred to the replacement case. I am consulting with an aviation attorney to determine whether the engine can be legally rebuilt or overhauled and reinstalled in the airplane.

Title: A BE95-B55 DURING THE ENG REMOVAL FOR OVERHAUL THE ENG DATA PLATE DID NOT MATCH THE ENG SERIAL NUMBER IN THE LOGBOOK.

Narrative: UNCOWLED R ENG IN PREPARATION TO HAVE REMOVED FOR OVERHAUL. WHEN ENG DATA PLATE WAS EXPOSED; NOTICED THAT ENG SERIAL NUMBER DID NOT MATCH THE SERIAL NUMBER IN THE ENG LOGBOOK. ACFT IS A 1967 BEECH BARON 95-B55 WITH CONTINENTAL IO-470L ENGS. I HAVE OWNED THE AIRPLANE FOR APPROX 6 YRS; AND THE ENG HAS NOT BEEN REMOVED AT ANY TIME SINCE I BOUGHT THE AIRPLANE. THE PROB WAS NOT REVEALED DURING THE PRE-PURCHASE INSPECTION OR DURING NUMEROUS ANNUAL INSPECTIONS AND MAINT ACTIONS PERFORMED BY A NUMBER OF REPAIR FACILITIES OVER THE YRS. THE ENG LOG INDICATES THAT THE ENG WAS INSTALLED SEP/XA/72; APPARENTLY AS AN OVERHAUL-EXCHANGE UNIT. THE LOG ALSO SHOWS THAT THE ENG WAS LAST OVERHAULED ON DEC/XA/95; AND THAT THE CASE WAS 'REWORKED' AS PART OF THAT OVERHAUL. I WOULD SPECULATE THAT 'REWORKED' MAY MEAN IT WAS REPLACED WITH A SVCABLE CASE FROM ANOTHER ENG; AND THE ORIGINAL DATA PLATE WAS NOT XFERRED TO THE REPLACEMENT CASE. I AM CONSULTING WITH AN AVIATION ATTORNEY TO DETERMINE WHETHER THE ENG CAN BE LEGALLY REBUILT OR OVERHAULED AND REINSTALLED IN THE AIRPLANE.
