Narrative:

After pushback; ground crew took an inordinate amount of time to disconnect. After salute; release; and taxi clearance; I began to taxi. I felt the tiller required extra effort and I checked to verify that I had turned the hydraulic pumps on. The pumps were on and I began a very slow right turn and the aircraft seemed to respond. However; the right turn was simply coincidental to my turning of the tiller which still did not feel right. I then stopped the aircraft and as I did; the tiller deflected full right without command. I called ZZZ ground; company ramp; maintenance controller; and maintenance. We were towed back to the gate for maintenance inspection and new maintenance release docs. I never exceed a slow walking speed while taxiing and maintenance signed off without damage noted. Then flew to ord without further event.
