Departure teb runway 24 after lengthy delay for other aircraft in-flight emergency. At time of leveloff and turn to 280 degrees. Approach called and wanted transponder reset to XXXX from XXXY. Altitude slipped to 1700 ft MSL from 1500 ft MSL during all maneuvers. Understand altitude is critical at teb due to ewr traffic. Should use autoplt more for maneuvers.
