Narrative:

Departed south from runway 24 on the teb 5 departure. Altitude preselect was set to 1500 ft. During takeoff autoplt was engaged at approximately 800 ft MSL. The heading bug was then turned to 280 degrees as per the departure. While configuring the heading the altitude is reaching leveloff of 1500 ft MSL. Since the aircraft was climbing at 1800-2000 ft per minute the autoplt could not react quick enough to level at 1500 ft MSL. The autoplt did attempt to level off approximately 1750 ft MSL; which is over the 1500 ft prescribed. At this point the autoplt was manually disconnected and an attempt was made to descend back down to 1500 ft MSL. During this exact moment the controller was questioning our altitude and we reported 1700 ft MSL.

Title: A LR45 PLT RPTS THE AUTOPLT ALT CAPTURE FAILED TO CAPTURE THE INITIAL 1500 FT ALT BECAUSE OF THE ACFT CLB RATE ON THE TEB 5 DEP.

Narrative: DEPARTED S FROM RWY 24 ON THE TEB 5 DEP. ALT PRESELECT WAS SET TO 1500 FT. DURING TKOF AUTOPLT WAS ENGAGED AT APPROX 800 FT MSL. THE HDG BUG WAS THEN TURNED TO 280 DEGS AS PER THE DEP. WHILE CONFIGURING THE HDG THE ALT IS REACHING LEVELOFF OF 1500 FT MSL. SINCE THE ACFT WAS CLBING AT 1800-2000 FT PER MINUTE THE AUTOPLT COULD NOT REACT QUICK ENOUGH TO LEVEL AT 1500 FT MSL. THE AUTOPLT DID ATTEMPT TO LEVEL OFF APPROX 1750 FT MSL; WHICH IS OVER THE 1500 FT PRESCRIBED. AT THIS POINT THE AUTOPLT WAS MANUALLY DISCONNECTED AND AN ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO DSND BACK DOWN TO 1500 FT MSL. DURING THIS EXACT MOMENT THE CTLR WAS QUESTIONING OUR ALT AND WE RPTED 1700 FT MSL.
