Narrative:

Aircraft #1 was climbing out of stewart airport; 20 degrees right of course; to 17000 ft. Aircraft #2 was descending eastbound out of 11000 ft to 7000 ft (also turned 20 degrees right of course). I believed I had 3 mi until aircraft #1 reported aircraft #2 in sight then aircraft #1 was told to maintain visual separation; and cleared on course. The traffic was in a single sight radar area. The conflict alert often goes off with these aircraft because 3 mi separation is allowed. However; the parameters are set at 5 mi. This becomes distracting at times because it is not an accurate depiction of separation issues.

Title: ZBW CTLR EXPERIENCED OPERROR AT APPROX 16000 FT UTILIZING RADAR VECTORS WITH DSNDING AND CLBING ACFT.

Narrative: ACFT #1 WAS CLBING OUT OF STEWART ARPT; 20 DEGS R OF COURSE; TO 17000 FT. ACFT #2 WAS DSNDING EBOUND OUT OF 11000 FT TO 7000 FT (ALSO TURNED 20 DEGS R OF COURSE). I BELIEVED I HAD 3 MI UNTIL ACFT #1 RPTED ACFT #2 IN SIGHT THEN ACFT #1 WAS TOLD TO MAINTAIN VISUAL SEPARATION; AND CLRED ON COURSE. THE TFC WAS IN A SINGLE SIGHT RADAR AREA. THE CONFLICT ALERT OFTEN GOES OFF WITH THESE ACFT BECAUSE 3 MI SEPARATION IS ALLOWED. HOWEVER; THE PARAMETERS ARE SET AT 5 MI. THIS BECOMES DISTRACTING AT TIMES BECAUSE IT IS NOT AN ACCURATE DEPICTION OF SEPARATION ISSUES.
