Narrative:

En route to ZZZ; I believe we were struck by lightning several times. On vectors to ZZZ approach; we selected flaps 8 degrees then 20 degrees. An amber EICAS 'flaps fail' appeared. We notified approach that we would need radar vectors to complete our checklist prior to our approach. I conferred with flight control and company maintenance prior to landing. Prior to beginning the approach; we declared an emergency. The landing was made without event.
