Narrative:

Just after takeoff at 600 ft; a large black waterfowl type bird dove into the left engine. We didn't feel the impact; but smelled the remains. Flight attendants called indicating cowl damage and a scraping sound. Our engine gauges were normal with the exception of a slightly increased vibration (1.2) we elected to divert to ZZZ1 and declare an emergency due to the slightly overweight landing (203.0 pounds versus 198.0 pound limit). The approach and landing were normal and we didn't need to shut down the engine.
